Recording this month's installment of the ongoing project to document my improvisational ability was by far the toughest, and made me question the process. I'm sure that by the summer of 2023 I will look back at September 2022 and laugh, because I can almost guarantee there will be more roadblocks ahead. this month was tough for multiple reasons, not the least of which being that I became ill in the latter half of the month with a throat and nose infection, so playing a woodwind instrument was a strain to say the least. Also in September we lost Pharoah Sanders, a literally untouchable name in the world of avant garde music, this passing was one I mourned in the same way I mourned the recent loss of Jaimie Branch and Monnette Sudler. This year has not been kind to my idols. School is another pain, having starting on the 1st, everyday since has been a balance between school, work, recording, practice, networking, and the awesome High Zero festival in Baltimore. The album cover differs from that of the previous covers in this series, possibly it is due to a lack of time on my end, possibly it is a more mourning cover, possibly it is only what it is. Who am I to say, I'm only the creator.
The 3rd of 12 in a monthly series of improvisations for solo instruments. Next month's instrument is the electric guitar.
Recorded at home, between September 8th 2022 and September 26th.
Inspired by Anthony Braxton, Sam Newsome, Derrick Michaels, Patrick Shiroishi, Pharoah Sanders, James Fei
